Lofa County

 

Established in 1964 from the former Western Province, Lofa County is one of Liberia’s 15 counties, located in the Northwestern Region with its capital in Voinjama.

Named after the Lofa River that traverses its landscape, Lofa is Liberia’s second largest county by area and is distinguished by its borders with Guinea to the north and east and Sierra Leone to the west, its rich multi-ethnic heritage spanning the Lorma, Gbandi, Kissi, Kpelle, Mandingo, and Mende peoples, the Wologizi and Wanigisi mountain ranges, and its historical role as the breadbasket of Liberia. According to the 2022 LISGIS Population and Housing Census, the county has a population of 367,376 distributed across 11 Administrative Districts and 5 Electoral Districts.
