Maryland County

Admitted to the Republic of Liberia in 1857 as its fourth county, Maryland County is one of Liberia’s 15 counties, located in the Southeastern Region with its capital in Harper.

Originally established in 1834 as the Colony of Maryland in Africa by the Maryland State Colonization Society as a homeland for free African Americans, Maryland County occupies the southeasternmost corner of Liberia, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the Cavalla River forming the international boundary with Côte d’Ivoire to the east. The county is predominantly home to the Grebo people and is distinguished by its maritime heritage, its lighthouse city of Harper (also known as Cape Palmas), tropical rainforest cover, and its historic status as an independent republic before unification with Liberia. According to the 2022 LISGIS Population and Housing Census, the county has a population of 172,587 distributed across 7 Administrative Districts and 3 Electoral Districts.

The comprehensive county profile below explores Maryland’s governance, history, population, economy, geography, infrastructure, and development indicators.
