Nimba County

Established in 1964 from the former Central Province, Nimba County is one of Liberia’s 15 counties, located in the Northeastern Region with its capital in Sanniquellie.

Named after Mount Nimba (Neinbaa Tohn in the Mano language, meaning “a slipping mountain for sisters”), Nimba is Liberia’s largest county by land area and its second most populous, sharing international borders with Guinea to the northwest and Côte d’Ivoire to the east. The county is home to the Gio and Mano as its predominant ethnic groups, rich iron ore deposits historically mined through the LAMCO project and now operated by ArcelorMittal, and the ecologically significant Nimba Range, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to the 2022 LISGIS Population and Housing Census, the county has a population of 621,841 distributed across 17 Administrative Districts and 9 Electoral Districts.

The comprehensive county profile below explores Nimba’s governance, history, population, economy, geography, infrastructure, and development indicators.
