Independence Day Observance

Independence Day Observance

July 26 is Liberia’s national Independence Day, the most important civic holiday on the national calendar. The date has been observed since 1847, though its official status was formally reaffirmed in 2011 when President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf proclaimed it National Independence Day by presidential declaration.

Official Ceremonies

Celebrations in Liberia center on Monrovia (Montserrado County), where official state ceremonies are held at the Capitol Building and on the grounds of the Executive Mansion. The President delivers a national address, followed by a military parade, cultural performances, and public festivities.

County Observances

County capitals across all 15 counties hold their own observances — see the Counties section for profiles of all 15 counties. The day carries deep personal meaning: families gather, national colors are displayed, and the founding story is retold and celebrated.

Diaspora Celebrations

Among Liberians in the diaspora, July 26 is observed with particular intensity. Brooklyn Park, Minnesota — home to the largest Liberian population outside of Liberia itself, holds annual celebrations that draw thousands of Liberian, Americans. Similar observances take place in communities across the United States, the United Kingdom, and wherever Liberians have settled around the world.
